Key Aspects:
Scope and Application
- Applies to the erection, installation, alteration, repair, relocation, replacement, addition to, use, or maintenance of plumbing systems within North Carolina.
- Regulates sanitary and vacuum collection systems.
- Excludes detached one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses not more than three stories high with separate means of egress and their accessory structures, which shall comply with the International Residential Code.
- Provisions in the appendices shall not apply unless specifically adopted.
General Regulations
- Materials used shall be installed in strict accordance with the standards under which the materials are accepted and approved.
- All plumbing products and materials shall be listed by a third-party certification agency as complying with the referenced standards.
- Plumbing systems shall be designed and installed to prevent rodents from entering structures.
- Piping shall be protected against external corrosion by a protective sheathing or wrapping or other means that will withstand any reaction from the lime and acid of concrete, cinder, or other corrosive material.
Fixture Requirements
- Plumbing fixtures shall be constructed of approved materials, with smooth, impervious surfaces, free from defects and concealed fouling surfaces.
- The maximum water flow rates and flush volume for plumbing fixtures and fixture fittings shall comply with Section 604.4.
- Water closets having a concealed trap seal or an unventilated space or having walls that are not thoroughly washed at each discharge in accordance with ASME A112.19.2/CSA B45.1 shall be prohibited.
- The supply lines and fittings for every plumbing fixture shall be installed so as to prevent backflow.
Water Supply and Distribution
- The water service pipe shall be sized to supply water to the structure in the quantities and at the pressures required in this code.
- Where water service piping is located in the same trench with the building sewer, such sewer shall be constructed of materials listed in Table 702.2.
- Where the building sewer piping is not constructed of materials listed in Table 702.2, the water service pipe and the building sewer shall be horizontally separated by not less than 5 feet (1524 mm) of undisturbed or compacted earth.
