2024 Ohio Building Code

The 2024 Ohio Building Code, effective March 1, 2024, is a comprehensive update that incorporates by reference the 2021 International Codes along with Ohio-specific amendments, streamlining and modernizing the state’s regulations. Unlike prior versions that duplicated large portions of the model codes, the new code includes only Ohio’s amendments, significantly reducing the length and complexity of the regulations by removing over 610,000 words and thousands of redundant restrictions. This revision covers all aspects of building design, construction, alterations, repairs, and occupancy changes, and applies to projects with plan submissions on or after the effective date. The goal is to simplify compliance while maintaining safety and consistency, making the rules clearer for builders, designers, and code officials across Ohio.

• Format Change: Ohio now incorporates the model codes by reference rather than duplicating all the text, focusing only on Ohio’s amendments.
• Significant Reduction: Over 610,000 words removed from Ohio’s Administrative Code; thousands of redundant or outdated regulatory restrictions eliminated.
• Scope: Applies to new construction, alterations, repairs, occupancy changes, maintenance, and demolition for residential and commercial buildings.
  
• Applicability: Projects submitted for plan review before March 1, 2024 follow the old code; those on or after must comply with the new code.
