2021 Virginia Mechanical Code

The 2021 Virginia Mechanical Code (VAMC) is a comprehensive regulatory document that establishes minimum safety standards for the design, installation, maintenance, and inspection of mechanical systems within the Commonwealth of Virginia. It governs systems such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, exhaust, ductwork, combustion air, and mechanical ventilation in both residential and commercial buildings. The code is based on the 2021 International Mechanical Code (IMC), with modifications made to suit Virginia’s specific regulatory environment. It is adopted and enforced as part of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC), which ensures uniform mechanical system standards across all jurisdictions in the state. The 2021 edition became effective on January 18, 2024, allowing a one-year grace period where either the 2018 or 2021 version could be used—provided the project followed one version in full. After January 18, 2025, the 2021 code becomes mandatory for all new construction and major alterations. The VAMC is designed to protect public health, safety, and welfare by ensuring mechanical systems operate efficiently, safely, and reliably, accounting for advancements in technology, updated energy standards, and modern construction practices. Local building officials and inspectors enforce the VAMC, and compliance is required for obtaining mechanical permits and passing inspections.
