Book Overview
The TMS 402/602 Building Code Requirements and Specifications for Masonry Structures, 2016 contains two standards and their commentaries: Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures designated as TMS 402-16 (and formerly designated as TMS 402/ACI 530/ASCE 5) and Specification for Masonry Structures designated as TMS 602-16 (and formerly designated as TMS 602/ACI 530.1/ASCE 6). These standards are produced by The Masonry’s Society’s Committee TMS 402/602 and were formerly developed through the joint sponsorship of The Masonry Society (TMS), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (SEI/ASCE) through the Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC). In late 2013, ACI and ASCE relinquished their rights to these standards to TMS who has served as the lead sponsor of the Standards for a number of years. Since then, the Committee has operated solely under the sponsorship of The Masonry Society, and the Committee’s name, and the names of the standards, were re-designated.
Key aspects:
- Integrated Code and Specification
- Structural Design Requirements (TMS 402-16)
- Construction Specifications (TMS 602-16)
- Anchor Bolt and Shear Friction Provisions
- Updated Quality Assurance Requirements
Highlights:
- Commentary sections providing background and explanation for each provision
- Referenced ASTM and ACI standards for material and design compatibility
- Aligned with International Building Code (IBC) adoption cycles
- Used as a core reference in structural engineering education and practice
About TMS
The Masonry Society (TMS), founded in 1977, is a nonprofit professional organization dedicated to advancing knowledge and practice in masonry design, construction, and materials. Based in the United States, TMS brings together engineers, architects, contractors, educators, and industry professionals to promote the use of masonry through education, research, and the development of technical standards. The Society publishes key documents such as the TMS 402/602 Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures, which is widely referenced in U.S. building codes. TMS also offers technical resources, professional development opportunities, and the TMS Journal, the only peer-reviewed journal in North America focused exclusively on masonry. Through its work, TMS supports innovation, safety, sustainability, and excellence in the masonry industry.
